Literature
Promoting literary research across our degree programmes and communities
Literature at UHI brings together researchers from across the Highlands and Islands who explore literary texts, adaptations, drama and non-fiction.
We are based at UHI Inverness, Perth and Outer Hebrides , and our lecturers are active researchers, teachers and practitioners. We promote literary research across our undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes, and we work with local communities on a variety of public engagement programmes. We are also involved in knowledge exchanges with museums, archives, libraries and heritage bodies.
Our research explores a number of key themes and issues: we have strengths in particular periods (Renaissance to Contemporary), genres (Science Fiction, Nature Writing, Spy Fiction, Drama, Cinema, Adaptations, Gothic, Poetry) and themes (gender, identity, place, theory, philosophy, history). Some of our staff are also active creative writers and theatre practitioners. In particular, our staff are involved in research about
- Eighteenth-century Literature
- Philosophy and History
- Scottish and British identity
- Gender and erotic writing
- Place and literary tourism
- Biography and autobiography
- Gothic
- 19th-century Women’s Fiction
- Literary Theory
- Science, nature and urban writing
- 20th-century and contemporary literature and philosophy
- Science Fiction and Avant- garde fiction
- Gaelic literature
- Adaptations and adaptation theory
- Drama and Performance
- Folklore and copyright
- Renaissance literature and culture
- Material Culture
- Genre fiction and science fiction
- Popular culture and cinema
We see our undergraduate and postgraduate students as 'junior researchers', and they receive hands-on digital skills training and research experience on our projects. They are involved in ‘Macpherson’s Ossianic Legacy’, the ‘Hub for the Study of British Identities’ and ‘Meet the Books: Highlights from the Fraser Mackintosh Collection’.
