Healthy and Sustainable Communities
UHI’s mission is to have a transformational impact on our region’s communities, and this is reflected in our place-based research. Our research is linked to the regional demography and geography of the region concentrating on activities related to health and wellbeing of people residing within remote and rural communities, the critical analysis of issues relating to the sustainability and heritage of rural communities, and the implications of climate change and the shift to net zero has on these communities’ employment, skills, and infrastructure needs.

Innovative Energy Solutions
Scotland is leading extensive initiatives in relation to the energy transition and UHI researchers are concentrating on understanding the net zero landscape and the implications the shift to net zero has on the region. This includes research into feasibility studies, sustainable aviation technologies, energy audits and carbon footprint assessments, and circular economy initiatives.
