Dr Su Bryan is the Dean of the Faculty of Science, Health, and the Environment, bringing over 30 years of experience in education and academic leadership across Scottish universities. She holds an undergraduate degree in biology from the University of Oxford and a PhD in behavioural ecology from the University of Stirling. Before transitioning into education, Su began her career in conservation in North Wales, then discovered her passion for teaching, which led her to take up an educational role at the University of St Andrews.

In 2006, following the birth of her two sons, Su moved to a part-time lecturer position at the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) in Elgin, where she was captivated by UHI’s unique regional and tertiary education model, which she saw as transformative for learners. Her career at UHI progressed as she took on increasingly senior roles, including module leader, programme leader, and subject network leader, culminating in her appointment as dean of the Faculty of Science, Health and Environment in August 2023.

Su's leadership extends across multiple disciplines, including health, engineering, technology, and science. She has made significant national contributions in areas such as computing and digital skills, land and marine-based education, and the energy sector. A strong advocate for interdisciplinary approaches to learning, she is committed to forging meaningful connections between academic staff, students, and industry.

Passionate about widening access to careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), Su chairs the Highlands and Islands STEM Partnership. She is dedicated to breaking down barriers for underrepresented groups and inspiring the next generation of STEM professionals. In recognition of her exceptional contributions to higher education, teaching, and leadership, Su has been awarded Principal Fellowship status by Advance HE.
