Building Resilience: Understanding the Impact of ACEs (SCQF level 11) CPD Award

Course code B993

What is special about this course?

This CPD award, Building Resilience: Understanding the Impact of ACES, will interest any person working (or wishing to work) with children and young people in a professional capacity.

Scotland is actively engaging with the recommendations of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child. This module will provide key insights into these recommendations, allowing you to analyse the policies, frameworks and legislation that protect children’s rights in Scotland.

The module will focus on how Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), such as poverty, child abuse or substance misuse, can affect a child or young person’s life chances and development, and the potential impact ACEs can have on future behaviour, relationships and employment opportunities.

You will explore the relationship between physical health, mental health and self-esteem, while evaluating different initiatives that promote resilience through health and wellbeing. Through critical analysis and reflection, you will examine the term ‘professional practice’ and consider how supporting best practice can positively influence life chances.

A number of potential areas for action have been suggested to help prevent and reduce the impact of ACEs, including: increasing awareness and understanding; primary prevention (through policy and strategic development); secondary prevention (increasing resilience in children and young people to reduce the impact of ACEs); and tertiary prevention (supporting those affected to prevent generational transition). All of these areas require the involvement of a wide range of professionals to ensure that they have the knowledge and skills to identify, support, help to prevent, and reduce, the impact of ACEs. This module will provide that knowledge, appealing to professionals from fields such as:

  • Healthcare
  • Social work and social care
  • Education
  • Housing
  • Criminal justice
  • Police
  • Voluntary organisations
  • Scottish Government policy makers and planners
