UHI lecturer receives prestigious award for global impact in optometry

The University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) is proud to announce that Dr Godwin Ovenseri-Ogbomo, Senior Lecturer in Optometry, has been awarded the 2024 American Academy of Optometry Essilor Award for Outstanding International Contributions to Optometry.

This prestigious award recognises those who have made exceptional advances in optometry and eyecare, and Dr Ovenseri-Ogbomo was nominated for his global impact in the field. The award will be presented at the American Academy of Optometry Meeting in Indianapolis later this year. 

Dr Ovenseri-Ogbomo has made significant contributions to optometry education, clinical practice, and global health initiatives throughout his distinguished career. After earning his Doctor of Optometry and Master of Public Health in Nigeria, and a PhD in South Africa, he has taught and developed optometry programmes at leading universities in Ghana, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, and the UK. He has played a pivotal role in establishing optometry education and services, advancing low vision care and shaping vision rehabilitation standards, and has been involved in multiple international initiatives and research efforts. He has over 60 peer-reviewed publications and is actively engaged in curriculum development and mentoring the next generation of optometrists.  

Continuing his pioneering work in optometry education, Dr Ovenseri-Ogbomo joined UHI in 2021, where he leads several modules and serves as the research lead for the optometry programme. He remains dedicated to advancing the field through his teaching and outreach efforts.  Reflecting on the award, Dr Ovenseri-Ogbomo said:

“Being honoured with the American Academy of Optometry Essilor Award for Outstanding International Contribution to Optometry is a moment of immense pride and joy for me. This prestigious recognition not only validates my dedication to advancing optometric education but also motivates me to continue pushing the boundaries of our field. I am deeply grateful to the academy and Essilor for this incredible honour. This award inspires me to further my commitment to training the next generation of optometrists and ultimately improve global eye health care and to collaborate with my esteemed colleagues to make a lasting impact.”
