Women Welding and Electrics Course Sparks Success at UHI Shetland

UHI Shetland's recent Introduction to Welding and Electrics course was a huge success, inspiring women to explore career opportunities in engineering and green skills industries. The one-day course, held at the Scalloway Campus on Saturday 3 March, welcomed 15 women from across Shetland, offering hands-on experience in welding and electrics.

The fully booked course was designed to empower women considering careers linked to the energy transition or those looking to reskill in green industries. The day included practical workshops, confidence-building exercises, and insights into the crucial role of women in the future of sustainable technologies.

Participants praised the course for its engaging format, supportive atmosphere, and the opportunity to try out engineering skills in a welcoming environment. The initiative aligns with UHI Shetland’s commitment to promoting inclusivity and supporting women into industries where they are traditionally underrepresented.

This course was made possible thanks to funding from the Energy Transition Zone (ETZ) and the Scottish Government’s Just Transition Fund. Their support plays a vital role in breaking down barriers and encouraging diversity in the workforce as Shetland transitions towards a greener economy.

Due to the high demand and overwhelmingly positive feedback, UHI Shetland hopes to offer similar opportunities in the future. Although no future dates are confirmed, the organisation is actively exploring options to expand its green skills training for women.
