Research degrees
Through independent study and an extended period of supervised research, a postgraduate research degree results in a thesis which "makes a distinct contribution to knowledge and affords evidence of originality as shown by the exercise of independent critical powers."
Undertaking a research degree is a big decision, one which requires commitment to stay engaged and motivated. You must:
- be inspired and absorbed by the subject
- thrive when working independently
- be happy with the awarding university's offering
- enjoy the location you will study and live in
MRes – Masters by Research
Research degrees at masters level involve independent in-depth study, either on your own research topic or a set project. While developing specialist knowledge, you'll build transferable skills that will put you in a strong position for further research study and your future career.
PhD – Doctor of Philosophy
A PhD is a high level, globally-recognised qualification, rooted in original research and is rigorous and demanding. Most students are passionate about their area of interest and pursue a PhD as a result of their academic curiosity and desire for research excellence.
