Island Voices in Indian Languages

Among several small research projects being piloted in CIALL’s first year is one which looks to build on the legacy of the Mediating Multilingualism collaboration, by experimentally re-purposing at scale an early Island Voices film in multiple languages of India.

Launched online by Professor Udaya Narayana Singh of UHI's Mediating Multilingualism partner Amity University Haryana, with the assistance of Adhibhash, the project output – The Children’s Parliament in Barra – in thirteen different scheduled languages of India (in addition to the original Gaelic and English) is now freely available to view.

The background to the project is described in detail on the Island Voices site, with live links in both landscape and phone-friendly portrait format to all the new films, noting in particular that several of the languages included are also used extensively in diaspora communities in Scotland and the wider UK.

A start has also been made on adapting Clilstore learner-assistive software to accommodate those languages not already available through it. This remains work in progress.
