Accessibility and additional support
Our campuses are accessible to people with mobility difficulties. We can also organise adaptations and support for students, such as BSL-English Interpreters or Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans.
We offer a friendly, professional and inclusive Learning Support service. Please talk to us about how we could support you to get the most out of your time with us.
Accommodation
We have purpose-built student accommodation on the Inverness Campus, offering 300 en-suite bedrooms with shared kitchen and living areas.
Private accommodation
If you are a full-time student living in private accommodation, you can print off a Council Tax exemption letter in week one of your course, from the Student Hub.

Assistive technology
UHI has assistive technology and built-in accessibility features that may support you during your studies.
Bicycles
There are covered spaces for bicycles at UHI House, UHI Inverness and student accommodation in Inverness.
Hi Bike Inverness also has electric bike hire at various points around Inverness.
Brightspace
Brightspace is the virtual learning environment used at UHI. All students will be able to access Brightspace once they have been enrolled on their units/modules.

Buses
Anyone under the age of 22 living in Scotland can get free bus travel in Scotland.
You will need a National Entitlement Card (NEC) or Young Scot National Entitlement Card (Young Scot NEC) to access free bus travel.
Café
The café at UHI House is open Monday to Friday.
At UHI Inverness, you can visit the Lochan café (downstairs) and the larger Corrie restaurant (upstairs).

Care experienced
We are here to help care experienced young people. We can provide tailored support to care experienced young people to help them succeed.
Caring responsibilities
The Carers Trust Scotland define a carer as ‘anyone who cares, unpaid, for a friend or family member who due to illness, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction cannot cope without their support.’ If you have any of these additional responsibilities, we can provide you with help and support.
Childcare
The Care and Learning Alliance operate an early learning childcare service from the Inverness campus.
Clearing
Sometimes things go better or worse than planned so it’s a great idea to know what your options could be.
Clearing opens the first week of July and is there if:
- You are applying to university after 30 June
- You didn’t receive any offers (or none you wanted to accept)
- You didn’t meet the conditions of your offer
- You have declined your firm place using the ‘decline my place’ button in your application
Code of conduct
Students will be made aware of the Code of conduct during induction. This is an agreement for all students to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience at UHI.

At UHI, we want you to have an excellent experience. We take complaints very seriously and aim to resolve them as quickly as possible.

Estranged students
If you are irreconcilably estranged from both of your biological or adoptive parents, or only living parent, then you would be considered an estranged student (Stand Alone definition).
As an institution UHI have signed the Stand Alone Pledge, which commits us to supporting students studying without the support or approval of a family network.
If you feel you need some support, contact your local support services team who will be able to help you with a range of issues.
Equality, diversity and inclusion
We expect everyone (staff, students and visitors) to treat each other with respect within a positive and enabling culture of work and study. Speak to any member of staff if you have cause for concern.
Exams and assessments
Your course tutor will give you an assessment schedule when you begin your course. You will need to bring a suitable form of photographic ID (i.e. passport or driving licence) for all UHI exams. You must turn up for exams you have been entered for. A doctor’s note is required if illness causes you to miss your exam.
If you have additional support needs which include a requirement for alternative assessment arrangements (e.g. reader, IT, additional time etc.), or assignment extensions, you should discuss this with the Learning Support team as soon as possible.
Exploring the Highlands and Islands
The Highlands and Islands of Scotland is an international travel destination, with extraordinary landscapes and culture on your doorstep. There is so much to do, from climbing a munro, to a traditional Scottish Ceilidh, exploring the islands, or the North Coast 500, you will have a student experience like no other.
Muslim students
In Inverness, the Mosque & Islamic Community & Education Centre is at 1 Portland Pl, Inverness IV1 1NE.
The ISOCI society is the Islamic student society, and aims to cater to the social, educational and religious needs of Muslim students at UHI. Get in touch with Vice-president Nabharn at 20019425@uhi.ac.uk.
Christian students
Inverness is home to several Christian dominations, with churches throughout the city.
The Christian union at UHI is for students in Inverness and the surrounding areas. Get in touch at uhicu.ness@gmail.com.
Buddist students
The Highland Buddhist Community is based at 62 Academy St, Inverness IV1 1LP.
Multi-faith room
There is a multifaith room at the Inverness campus in room 154.
Financial support
Juggling your finances whilst studying can be hard, and there may be times when you need some extra support.
Fitness
There's a fitness suite at UHI Inverness, open for student use (for times, see MyDay and the gym door). There is no membership cost, but there is a small fee for induction and annual health and safety refreshers.
UHI students also benefit from 30% off membership fees for Highlife Highland, who have facilities across the Highlands.
Freshers’ week
Freshers’ week is a programme of events and activities organised by HISA in September, with another Freshers’ week in January.
Funding - Students from Scotland
Residents of Scotland can normally have their fees paid for by the Students Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS), and can also apply for student loans and other support. SAAS funding opens in April and you must apply every year for your funding.
Funding - Students from England, Wales and Northern Ireland
There are a number of funding grants and loans available to UK-domiciled students (outside Scotland) through the Student Loans Company (SLC).
Scholarships, bursaries, awards and discretionary funds
During your studies with us, there are many scholarships, bursaries, awards and discretionary funds available to you to during the academic year.
Gender based and sexual violence
UHI is committed to supporting any student who is a victim/survivor of GBV, regardless of their gender, sex, or sexual orientation. At UHI, we will listen and we can help.
Hair and beauty salons
We have a student run hair and beauty salon at UHI Inverness. Students can receive affordable treatments in our Breagha Hair and Beauty Salon.
Harassment
We have zero tolerance of harassment. Harassment includes threatening or abusive language, behaviour or materials. If you suffer harassment of any kind, please seek help from a member of staff.
Health and wellbeing
Looking after yourself will help you study better and ensure you can reach your full potential, but most importantly of all help you stay healthy. We have a wide range of resources, guidance, and services which can be accessed in person or online.

Highlands and Islands Students’ Association
Your students’ association is run by students, for students. They support student-led sports clubs, societies and networks, have a network of Student voice reps, and offer free and impartial advice.
Induction
You will receive details about your induction in July. It is important to attend to get key information including timetables, course and support information.
Please check the email you registered with to make sure you don’t miss important information about your induction.
Libraries
Libraries are available at UHI House and the UHI Inverness campus.
We have computers, group study spaces and wi-fi through the libraries. Printing and copying facilities are also available. The library service enables you to access books, e-books, and journals to support your learning.
Mental health
For anyone entering university, adjusting to life as a student; dealing with coursework and exams and being away from home for the first time can be potentially stressful and may also intensify any pre-existing conditions.
We offer a variety of support for you to consider when it comes to looking after your wellbeing. This ranges from self-help and peer support to counselling and referrals to specialist support off campus.
MyDay
The Myday portal is designed as a one-stop shop to help students navigate to various services, including email, Brightspace and your student account. Simply click on a tile to access the service.

Optometry register
You can help optometry students at UHI by volunteering to be a patient in their exams. You will receive £15 every time you attend a session.
Parking
Parking is free for students at UHI House. You will be able to register for this at induction, at the beginning of your course.
Period products
We provide free period products to all students who need them.
Personal academic tutor (PAT)
Throughout your studies you will have access to a Personal Academic Tutor (PAT).
Your PAT is the first point of contact for any concerns or queries you may have. They will work with the wider Student support team to ensure you have access to the information, support and guidance you need in order to help you succeed in your studies.

Referencing
Referencing is an essential part of academic work. UHI uses Harvard style referencing.
SAAS Student Awards Agency Scotland
SAAS funding is for students in all higher education courses. You must apply every year for your funding. SAAS aims to have your funding in place at the start of your programme, for all correctly completed applications received before 30th June. The Student support team can advise and support you with your application.
Smoking
We are a smoke free institution. If you wish to smoke, you must smoke outwith the UHI House site. Smoking is not allowed anywhere on the grounds. This includes e-cigarettes.
