Outline
PASS is a peer support scheme whereby experienced higher year students (‘leaders’) volunteer to mentor, support and facilitate the learning of lower year students (‘participants’ – usually 1st years). During an hour long timetabled weekly session, participants are invited by their leaders to discuss and solve as a group the academic problems which they have identified that week, thus promoting self-directed learning practices and helping them develop as independent learners. PASS has other aims: i) provide participants with a safe environment to voice concerns, questions, and generate feedback about the course, ii) assist them in their transition to HE, including study skills development, iii) help clarify course expectations through discussion with Leaders, and iv) increase peer interaction and install a sense of community within our large cohorts.
