LTA Connect: Reflexive Videos – Advantages of the E portfolio System
Being a reflexive practitioner can be challenging for many, especially when it comes to having the time and space to allow for true, honest reflection. Throughout the past academic year within the Graduate Apprenticeship BA Early Learning and Childcare we have been developing the use of the E portfolio for recording our reflexive practice (which is a core part of each year of the degree).

Session Outline
We have been developing the use of the video function for students to record their weekly ‘ponderings’ to gather their true reflexive thoughts, not only from their learning but their overall personal experiences and how they use this moving forward to enhance themselves as learner and practitioner.
Findings to date have shown it has allowed for a more emotive reflection, allowing truth, honesty and personal questioning to come through more freely, rather than being restricted to what is being written – and then deleted – when using pen on paper.
This session will show you how this method has been used within the eportfolio and now on discussion boards, to allow for open and honest discussions and reflections. You will hear from the Module Lead on why this was developed and students who use this method to develop their own learning and reflexive practice.
Presenters
Julie Jones, Beath Beazley, Jaclyn Thomson
Julie Jones is the Programme Leader for the Graduate Apprenticeship BA Early learning and Childcare (GAELC). She is currently the Module Lead of Leading Reflexive Practice within Early learning and Childcare where she is developing new tools and methods to encapsulate true reflexivity from the students in new and innovative methods that UHI have on offer.
Beth Beazley is a current GAELC student in her 3rd year of studies. Beth has used reflexive practice throughout each year of her studies, and now uses weekly videos to record her varying reflection of her week, whether this is her personal, learning or work journey.
Jaclyn Thomson is a current GAELC, also in her 3rd year of studies. Jaclyn has used the video method of reflection throughout this academic year capturing not only her challenges in study but her own personal challenges and passions and draws these all back to the Meta Skills which are at the heart of her learning.
