This workshop is designed to support those working in further and higher education settings to understand and apply basic UDL concepts and principles in a quick and easy way.

Taking an instructional design approach, the workshop introduces colleagues to critical UDL concepts including learner variability, expert learning, the UDL principles, the UDL guidelines, intentional learning design and session planning using the UDL principles.

Using the UDL principles and its practical guidelines, participants will learn:

  • The underpinning ideas and concepts around UDL
  • How to implement UDL into instructional practices
  • Strategies for evaluating and improving instruction
  • Advice, guidance, tips and approaches for applying UDL principles to instructional practices

This workshop is aimed at those who wish to apply UDL approaches to their teaching but are new to UDL as a concept and new to UDL instructional practices.

Kevin Merry

Kevin L. Merry is Associate Dean (Curriculum and Assessment) Global Banking School in the United Kingdom. An award-winning teacher, Kevin has received accolades for his approaches to accessible and inclusive curriculum design, and has become internationally renowned for his work on UDL. Through his role as founder and chair of the UDL United Kingdom and Ireland Higher Education Network (UDL-UKI), Kevin has supported adoption and implementation of UDL at higher education institutions in Europe, North America and Asia. The purpose of the UDL-UKI network is to identify, promote and support the development of approaches, models, tools, and practices that enable effective UDL practice in higher education settings. Kevin is the author of Delivering Inclusive and Impactful Instruction: Universal Design for Learning in Higher Education which was published in 2023 by CAST, the world leaders in UDL. Kevin is also the creator of the Talking Learning & Teaching Podcast, which is a resource for those involved in learning, teaching and assessment in a wide variety of education settings.
