Biography

Mark has managed the Maritime Studies Department at Orkney College UHI since 2011. An innovative staffing model using experienced seafarers to teach during shore leave has seen the department grow over the last decade, recently creating and delivering the world’s first government recognised crew certificate for hydrogen vessels.

Outside of the maritime field, Mark has worked in health and social care and still authors the popular legal commentary “Social Care and the Law in Scotland” now in its 12th edition. To relax he teaches Scotland’s only sail making and sail design course and in a previous career spent ten years self employed as a violin restorer and harp maker. He holds a commercial vessel skippers’ ticket and, under the Royal Yachting Association, is an approved instructor/assessor in navigation, advanced powerboat and VHF marine radio.

Mark lives in Stromness, Orkney, with his family and sails a restored 1967 Halcyon sailing boat.

Current research

Training for crews of hydrogen powered shipping. Recently led the team which wrote and delivered the world's first government recognised crew certificate for operating hydrogen powered vessels.
