Scotland’s newest university open for business and much more
With only five weeks to go before exam results are published, Scotland’s newest university, The University of the Highlands and Islands, is gearing up for more enquiries through the clearing process than ever before.
The university has places in all subjects across all its campuses thanks to an additional funding for 1000 students granted by the Scottish Funding Council in recognition of its new status.
“We are very much open for business - in fact business, marine science, archaeology, history, music, engineering to name a few,” said Principal and Vice-Chancellor, James Fraser. “Where other Scottish universities will be feeling the pinch this year, many not even entering the clearing process, we are finally in a position to recruit more students, particularly from our home area, the rest of Scotland, as well as the rest of the UK and internationally. We have plenty of room – just look at our geography!”
The university has already seen a 6% rise in applications including a nearly 50% increase in applications from young people from both inside and outside of our region.
Widely acknowledged as a major asset to the regional economy, the university aims to produce the academic know-how and skills training to sustain and create businesses, and support professional development, as well as championing local culture and the environment.
Donna Chisholm, HIE’s Head of Business Innovation and Growth Sectors, said: “The University of the Highlands and Islands is at the centre of creating social, cultural and economic opportunities. Working together, HIE and the University of the Highlands and Islands share a common goal of inspiring people to live and work here.
“The university’s unique and flexible model opens up new possibilities for people based in every part of the region. Graduates bring new skills to our businesses and cutting edge research supports the growth of sectors like Life Sciences and Renewable Energy.”
Degree courses that could lead to careers in music, renewable engineering, tourism and hospitality, health care, and children’s services are just some of the options in the new undergraduate prospectus offered by the university. The 2013 prospectus can be downloaded from the website at www.uhi.ac.uk or ordered from the information line on 0845 272 3600, or potential students can drop into any one of our 13 academic partner campuses across the Highlands and Islands for more information.
