Merger of Shetland College, NAFC Marine Centre and Train Shetland

Today’s merger announcement is great news for students, staff and the communities served by Shetland College and NAFC Marine Centre. Both the Scottish Funding Council (SFC) and the University of the Highlands and Islands are wholly committed to supporting the delivery of the highest quality further and higher education including research to communities in Shetland. The university and Scottish Funding Council fully support the full business case to create a new merged college from NAFC Marine Centre, Shetland College and Train Shetland. The proposed merger will allow for improved provision of education, training and research in Shetland. It will also give Shetland a stronger voice in the University of the Highlands and Islands partnership, and the ability to tap into regional developments and opportunities more effectively.    

As part of the transition process, the university will work with its colleagues in Shetland to identify new areas of curriculum and research to meet the needs of the community, its employers and its students. The university will also invest as appropriate to help ensure that, through the new college, the islands meet their full potential on a sustainable basis.
