UHI student wins national nursing award
A University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) nursing student has been awarded the National Student Nurse Congress Award 2023. Roma Gibb (39) from Evanton, was presented with the prize at a ceremony in London on Friday.
The National Student Nurse Congress Award is presented to a nursing student who has demonstrated exceptional leadership skills, academic excellence and commitment to the nursing profession. The award is highly competitive and open to nursing students across the United Kingdom.
Roma Gibb, who is in the third year of a BSc degree in nursing at UHI, was chosen for the award due to her academic achievements, leadership qualities and her dedication to patient care. She was praised for her work in devising and developing an innovative product which helps people with mobility issues get a good night’s sleep. The Bed Band is currently going through testing and the patenting process.
Speaking about her award, Roma said: “I was so proud to be nominated for this award by my lecturers and to win it in London was such a shock. After meeting the other nominees and seeing their achievements, it really shows the high standard of future nurses we have in the UK. I have had such fantastic support from UHI while I develop and test the Bed Band and to collect this award is the perfect way to finish my nursing degree. Studying at UHI has been a life changing experience and this award has pride of place on my shelf!”
Professor Nicola Carey, Head of UHI's Department for Nursing and Midwifery, congratulated Roma on her achievement, saying: “The National Student Nurse Congress Award is a testament to the exceptional talent and dedication of nursing students across the UK, so we are immensely proud that Roma has been recognised with this prestigious award. It’s a fantastic recognition of her hard work, determination and dedication. We are delighted to have Roma as a student at UHI and we look forward to seeing her continue to excel in her nursing career.”
