Sgoil Fhoghair: Immerse yourself in Gaelic language and culture in the heart of the Hebrides.

Immerse yourself in Gaelic language and culture in a new 5-day course from UHI North, West and Hebrides.

Gaelic is intrinsic to our island culture and heritage and students will have the unique experience of learning with expert Gaelic teachers and tradition bearers. This course has been developed to provide a new and exciting way of learning Gaelic while allowing students to connect with island culture.

The course will take place at Grinneabhat, in the village of Bragar on the West Side of the Isle of Lewis. You will fully immerse yourself in local Gaelic culture and community with a range of activities including:

  • Language classes
  • Cultural tours
  • Gaelic music and song

UHI NWH Gaelic Lecturer, Dr Anne Frater said: “We are delighted to be collaborating with Urras Coimhearsnachd Bhràdhagair agus Àrnoil to deliver this Bòrd na Gàidhlig funded course in a Gaelic-speaking community. We hope that this will become a regular partnership which will give Gaelic learners the confidence to use the language outside of a classroom setting.”

Peigi Ann Shields of Urras Coimhearsnachd Bhràdhagair agus Àrnoil said: “We were delighted to be asked to collaborate with UHI on this special project.  We are situated in a Gaelic speaking community and Gaelic is at the very heart of who we are and everything we do.  We have Gaelic classes on all year round and work to encourage anyone that would like to learn to do so. We are very much looking forward to welcoming students to Grinneabhat in October and giving them the opportunity to learn more of our language and culture."

Participants need to secure their own accommodation. Spaces are available at the hostel in Grinneabhat or a list of alternative accommodation can be provided on request. To book a bed at Grinneabhat please email info@bragararnol.org or phone 01851710210 and specify that you are booking as part of UHI NWH Immersion Week. You will not be able to book a hostel place for this week through the website.

The five-day course costs £100 per person. Over 18s only.
