UHI appoints Stephen Sheridan as Director of Economic Development and Advancement

The University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) is pleased to announce the appointment of Stephen Sheridan as its new Director of Economic Development and Advancement. With over 20 years of experience in senior management roles within education and skills, Stephen has a proven track record of fostering partnerships between industry, academia and government and has extensive experience working in the Highlands and Islands.

As Director of Economic Development and Advancement, Stephen will be responsible for spearheading initiatives that drive economic growth and innovation across the Highlands and Islands, Moray and Perthshire. His role will focus on fostering strong partnerships with businesses, government agencies, research institutions, and philanthropic sectors, ensuring that UHI continues to play a vital role in regional prosperity.

Stephen joins UHI from Skills Development Scotland on Monday 28 April where he is the regional skills planning lead, driving skills investment activity across the region in support of economic development.

He played a key role in developing Skills Investment Plans for the Highlands and Islands and currently chairs the Highlands and Islands Regional Economic Partnership Skills and Labour Subgroup. His recent focus has been supporting regional growth initiatives, including the Inverness and Cromarty Firth Green Freeport, inward investment projects, and regional growth deals.

Previously, Stephen worked with UHI on the early establishment of the tertiary Work-based Learning Hub, supporting the development of a regional approach to Foundation and Graduate Apprenticeships. His experience also includes senior roles at the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), where he was instrumental in developing commercial qualifications, securing external funding, and forming strategic partnerships.

Speaking on the appointment, Stephen said:

I am deeply committed to building on the strong partnerships UHI has established and I am looking forward to working with academic partners and industry to seize the once-in-a-generation opportunities for the benefit of the Highlands and Islands, Moray and Perthshire.”

Stephen’s appointment comes at a time of significant development for UHI, as the institution continues to position for growth, expand its research, industry partnerships and impact-driven initiatives.
