For many years apprentices at UHI Moray have achieved top places at various competitions beating off competitors from across the UK. The apprentices study at our Linkwood Technology Centre and are employed by local Moray employers.

Just last week three UHI Moray apprentices continued the winning trend and between them won gold, silver and highly commended.

  • Shaun Wilcox, employed by Moray Council, was awarded a Silver Medal in the WorldSkills UK Plumbing Competition; SkillPlumb. Shaun is a 2nd year apprentice who had previously won first place in regional heat of the copper category.
  • Kallum Low, who is employed by MS Electrical, competed in the UK SkillElectric Finals 2024 and was highly commended and will now have a place in the WorldSkills UK selection process with a chance of reaching the WorldSkills final in Shanghai 2026.
  • Liam Paterson, who is employed by Walkers Shortbread, competed in the WorldSkills UK Final for Renewable Energy. Liam excelled in all tasks and was placed first, winning the gold medal. Liam has been awarded a place in the WorldSkills UK Squad with a chance of representing the UK at the WorldSkills Final in Shanghai 2026.

Jim Mackinnon, Deputy Head of Curriculum for Construction, said:

"It is remarkable the success of these Moray apprentices who have competed for Scotland against apprentices from Wales, England and Northern Ireland." He praised their dedication required to reach these levels and thanked their employers for their support.

This isn't the first time a UHI Moray apprentice has made it to the final stages of the WorldSkills competition. In September 2024, a 3rd year electrical apprentice, Danny McBean, was part of the UK Squad for WorldSkills Lyon 2024, where he was awarded 4th place.
