Scottish History student is awarded dissertation grant

Congratulations to Tracy Metcalfe, one of our final year Scottish History students, who has been awarded a grant of £250 from the Economic History Society towards research costs relating to her final-year undergraduate dissertation. Tracy’s dissertation is provisionally titled: “‘Peter get your palace ready, Tak’ us a’ tae Bishopmill: We’re hungry, haggard, naked, needy, Be thou our good St Peter still”: Poverty and the Poorhouse in Morayshire, c. 1865–1890’. Using a wide range of records, including poorhouse records, relief applications, newspapers, censuses and family history resources, Tracy plans to explore the everyday experiences of poorhouse inmates and poor relief recipients by tracking them backwards in time from the point of their application for relief, through their time in the poorhouse and beyond. The grant from the Economic History Society will allow her to spend time working in key archives in Aberdeen and Elgin.
