Dr Philippa Woodcock awarded funding by the Strathmartine Trust
Congratulations to our Dr Philippa Woodcock, who has been awarded funding by The Strathmartine Trust to support her research project, ‘”They Wept Together": Miscarriage and the Hamilton Sisters in Early Modern Scotland'.
The case-study project seeks to uncover how Katherine, Susan and Margaret, the three daughters of Duchess Anne Hamilton, dealt with miscarriage in the late seventeenth century, largely through the study of their correspondence. Did they name miscarriage euphemistically or explicitly? Moreover, what strategies did this family and its extended network develop to manage the contrast between one couple’s successful childbearing and another’s loss? Most importantly, the project seeks to uncover how families recovered after miscarriage.
