She will discuss different types of ‘disasters’ the island has experienced in the recent past, from the deluge of 2017 (the island’s flagship environmental disaster; Kotsira, 2024) to challenges affecting its ecological sustainability and the island’s main source of income (tourism), also referred to as ‘disasters’ by those facing them. In outlining these, Eleni will draw on Deleuze’s concept of ‘desert islands’ and make the case that islanders, as well as returning summer travellers, while having to handle the different types of ‘disasters’ emerging, align their perception (inclusive of their plans, dreams, hopes and fears) more closely with Samothraki’s future, thus becoming the island’s consciousness.
