Fully-funded undergraduate study options for staff from January 2024
Are you looking to expand your skillset, learn something new or even pursue an existing passion? As part of our commitment to employee development, we’re delighted to offer staff across our partnership fully-funded undergraduate study options with courses starting from week commencing Monday 22 January.
Criteria
Criteria
- Courses must commence and be completed in semester two of 2024 – please refer to our academic calendar for semester dates.
- Applies to Scottish fee status students (staff domiciled in Scotland who meet the general residency requirements for Scottish fee status).
- Courses are at undergraduate level (SQA level 7 - 10) and include:
- Approved higher education continuous professional development (CPD) modules courses
- Modules offered by individual UHI partners – please check individual partner websites.
- Courses must be vocational or professional development related.
- Courses must be part time.

Apply via the apply link on the relevant course page, choosing the relevant Academic Partner you wish to study with, where appropriate. Contact the relevant partner below if you have any queries.
Please note, if you have not applied for a UHI course before, you cannot use your usual UHI log in details for the application form system. You will need to set up a separate account. You can use your UHI email address, its just a separate system to your UHI staff account so it will not recognise pre-existing passwords for example.

Can I get extra time during my working week to study?
UHI and Academic Partners are supportive of staff undertaking courses which benefit your development and as such, where possible, we will support your studies. Expectations will vary by employer, arrangements must be agreed with your line manager in advance: course attendance and time required to attend. For online study this may be less relevant so please check the course study mode.
Executive office staff should read our staff training and development policy for further information. Academic partner staff should check with your own relevant policies through your line manager or HR team.
I’m an Orkney Council member of staff, can I benefit from this scheme?
Yes, staff across the UHI partnership, including Orkney Council staff, are eligible to apply.
Do I need the necessary qualifications stated to study the course?
Yes, you are a student like any other. As such if the course has specific entry requirements related to qualifications or experience, you will need to have these and be able to evidence them.

What happens if I start one of these courses but then I leave my partner organisation, can I continue with the course?
Yes.
What if I decide that I no longer wish to study my course?
You can leave the course at any point if you wish.
Will there be similar opportunities in the future?
Decisions will be made on an annual basis however UHI staff are always eligible for a 20% fee discount on any taught higher education course.
Am I liable for paying the course fees if I fail the course?
No.
What happens if I’m already on one of the listed courses can I claim for the fee waiver retrospectively?
This offer only applies to courses which start and finish in semester two 2024 (this is usually from 22 January onwards). If one of these courses is also part of a longer qualification you are undertaking the fee waiver will not apply.
When will my course start?
Most of the courses available start from Monday 22 January 2024 onwards. If you apply after the deadline, you should be able to still enrol but it will be at the discretion of the relevant programme leader.

Additional free upskilling courses
UHI is also offering a limited number of free places on a range of postgraduate and undergraduate short courses starting in January, that are linked to key skills for upskilling individuals and the workforce and for regional economic recovery. These courses are supported by the Scottish Funding Council’s Upskilling Fund. Courses are free of charge and are delivered online.
