LTA Connect Series: Embedding Sustainability into the Curriculum - From Climate Anxiety to Climate Action: we can all make a difference

Session Outline

"Climate anxiety can leave us feeling entirely paralyzed and overwhelmed. But what flips the switch from worry to real-world impact? This upbeat talk explores the vital transition from passive dread to active connection, showing how regular people can transform fear into a powerful, hopeful force for nature."

I teach a range of environmental science modules at levels 6 to 11. The majority of this teaching revolves around or links to the need for sustainability in all aspects of our lives. I have a particular interest in what motivates individuals to engage with environmental or climate activism and how we can support each other to become more pro-active about addressing environmental issues.

Presenter

Heather Corpe

Dr Heather Corpe is a marine biologist turned environmental scientist whose lifelong interest in the living world has led to her current role of senior lecturer in our Land and Science Department. Heather first studied Marine Biology at Portsmouth University where she learned to scuba dive, spending much of her spare time beneath the chilly waters of the UK coastline. Heather's PhD 'The Behavioural Ecology of Young Harbour Seals in the Moray Firth' brought her to the Scottish Highlands where she later had the opportunity to work in Coastal Zone Management with the Moray Firth Partnership, as Project Officer for the Moray Firth SAC for bottlenose dolphins. Heather is passionate about the importance of environmental education and welcomes every opportunity to raise awareness of the issues impacting our planet today and the role we can play in addressing them. She is particularly interested in how we can use education to tackle issues such as climate anxiety and climate change denial; improving the accessibility and communication of science to improve understanding; empowering individuals to take action through their everyday activities.
