Reflecting and enhancing learning and teaching through the lens of PSF 2023: A4. support and guide learners

This two-hour workshop will reflect on participants approaches to student/learners support and guidance.  The workshop will use the new Professional Standards Framework (PSF) as a lens to explore A4 of the teaching framework and will also explore appropriate areas of ‘Core Knowledge’ and ‘Professional Values’ of the PSF.  The workshop will be split between reflective exercises and sharing of practice, as well as evidence informed knowledge exchange and action setting.

The Professional Standards Framework is managed by Advance HE and is globally recognised for benchmarking success within HE teaching and learning.  The PSF hasn’t been reviewed since 2011 and through consultation with colleagues working in Tertiary and HE learning and teaching, Advance HE have updated the framework to consider the changed landscape of HE.  Information sessions are running December and January to introduce the PSF 2023 and colleagues are encouraged to attend the session or watch a recording before attending this workshop.

The workshop is for anyone working at SCQF level 7 – 11 , this includes colleagues working in professional services who support and lead learning and teaching across tertiary education, and in particular for colleagues considering applying for HEA Fellowships through the UHI scheme ALPINE (Accredited Learning, Professional development and Innovation in Education).  HEA Fellowships are the recognised benchmark in the sector for success in HE learning and teaching.  The workshop will help participants and respective applicants to consider what examples of practice they might bring into an application for fellowship or identify areas of enhancement before seeking a fellowship through ALPINE.

For colleagues working in professional services this workshop could include approaches to enhancing learner support – student partnerships, peer assisted learning, student mentors etc or staff support and guidance including health and wellbeing, mentoring or coaching or induction activities and academic support.

The workshop is part of a series of four workshops, colleagues might want to attend all sessions or drop in on the ones of relevance/interest.  Colleagues applying for HEA Fellowship through ALPINE in academic year 2024-25 are encouraged to attend all four workshops where possible.

Alex leads staff-facing professional development in learning, teaching and associated academic practices offered across the university. This includes working with colleagues in the Academic Practice Development team and across UHI to design, implement and manage a arrange of professional recognition, mentoring, and development opportunities for UHI colleagues.  

Alex gained Principal Fellowship HEA (PFHEA) in 2021, and in 2022 completed a Masters in Tertiary and Higher Education, receiving a distinction for a dissertation researching mentoring for professional recognition. Alex is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA), Certified Member of the Association for Learning Technology (CMALT) and in 2023 gained a level 5 ILM qualification in coaching and mentoring.
