Uist local historian records stories

First results are coming through from CIALL engagement with local historian Tommy Macdonald, and the Cnoc Soilleir and UHI Archaeology interest in the taighean-tughaidh (thatched houses) of Uist.

Earlier this year we filmed Tommy onsite at Tobhta Mhic Eachainn, where he recounted some of the local history around the “French Macdonalds” from the remaining ruin of Neil MacEachan’s home.

Following that, Tommy has embarked on recording stories from Uist residents who were brought up in taighean-tughaidh (starting with his wife Betty!) or have other memories to share of this iconic Hebridean house-type.

Films of Tommy at Tobhta Mhic Eachainn and in conversation with Betty are now available to view on the Island Voices YouTube channel via this dedicated Taighean-tughaidh playlist, supplemented with various learner-friendly technical supports. Extracts will also be available for use by UHI Archaeology and/or Cnoc Soilleir partners in future research collaborations. Further detail is available on the Island Voices site.
