Shell-volution | Projects in development

Guided by priorities identified by Shetland mussel farmers and by the Project Board, Shell-volution is developing a portfolio of projects that will support innovation, improve understanding and help strengthen the sector's future.

These projects are subject to change as they progress through our project pipeline.

Please Note: as the impacts of Shell-volution projects are expected to be greatest felt in Shetland, most project-related fieldwork is likely to take place in Shetland.

Projects currently in developement

  • Standardised Spatfall Measurement and Reporting
Creating a consistent approach to recording spatfall across farms, helping to build a clearer picture of spat availability and support future decision-making.
  • Shetland Spat Success Programme
A collaborative initiative bringing together industry and research partners to improve spat prediction, recruitment, retention and early survival.
  • Spat Detection Tools
Exploring emerging imaging and AI technologies that could automate spat detection and strengthen future monitoring capabilities.
  • Mussel Losses Monitoring
Working with farmers to better understand where and when mussel losses occur throughout the production cycle, providing valuable information to guide future improvements.
  • Condition Index and Spawning Data Analysis
Reviewing existing data to improve understanding of mussel spawning patterns and how these relate to environmental conditions around Shetland.
  • Environmental Sampling Equipment
Establishing routine environmental monitoring through the use of temperature loggers and plankton sampling equipment at representative farming locations.
  • Reducing Mussel Losses During Stripping
Assessing handling methods and equipment that could help reduce losses during stripping operations and improve productivity.
  • Mussel Imaging and Morphometrics
Exploring underwater imaging technologies that can provide accurate information on mussel size, growth and stock performance.
  • AI for Mussel Measurement and Farm Monitoring
Investigating how artificial intelligence can support farm monitoring by analysing images and video, helping to increase efficiency and reduce manual effort.
  • Independent Scientific Adviser
Continuing to benefit from independent scientific expertise to ensure activities remain focused on industry priorities and grounded in robust evidence.
